Can you put yard waste in a dumpster? Yes, loaded on its own.
Yes. Limbs, brush and leaves go in a roll-off, but they must be loaded separately from household junk, or a fine can apply. A 20 yard costs $495 with 2 tons, and it holds about 10 pickup truck loads of yard debris, which is a lot of branches.

What counts as yard waste?
Branches, limbs, brush, grass clippings, leaves and pine straw all count. Soil, sod, sand and rock don't, since those are heavy materials we can't take. Stumps with dirt on them are a gray area, so shake the dirt off and ask us first.
Why we ask you to keep it separate
North Carolina bans yard trash from regular landfill loads, so it has to be kept apart and composted. That's why a mixed load can bring a fine. Fill the box with yard debris only, or put the household junk in a different box.
Jobs that fit a yard waste dumpster
- A tree down in the backyard, cut into 4-foot pieces
- Brush from clearing an overgrown fence line
- A season of leaves and pine straw
- Storm cleanup after a hurricane, a tornado or a bad summer storm
- Landscaping debris from tearing out beds
Brush removal dumpster: load it tight
Brush leaves a lot of air. Cut limbs under 4 feet and lay them in the same direction, like firewood, and you'll fit twice as much. Fresh green wood weighs a lot, up to a ton for a medium tree, so the 20 yard's 2 tons is plenty for most yards.
| Yard job | Size | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| One tree cut up | 20 yard | Half the box, 0.5 to 1 ton |
| Fence line clearing | 20 yard | Full box, about 1 ton |
| Hurricane cleanup, several trees | 30 yard | 2 to 3 tons |
Where to put the box
As close to the pile as the truck can reach. A hard, level spot keeps the wheels from sinking in the Sandhills sand, and clear air above the box lets us tilt it. If the pile is far from the drive, a wheelbarrow or a tarp drag does the job.
We've seen a lot of storm cleanups, and the same mistake shows up every time: someone tosses the soaked couch in with the limbs. Our 2 crews now ask on the first call whether it's all brush, because a mixed box means a fine for the customer, not for us. We hauled 11 storm boxes last fall.
Questions we hear most often.
Can I mix leaves and household trash?
No. Keep yard debris in its own box, apart from household junk, because a mixed load can bring a fine. If you want to clean the garage at the same time, rent a second box for the household items.
Are stumps allowed?
Small stumps with the dirt shaken off are usually fine, because the box takes organic debris when it's loaded on its own. Big stumps weigh a lot and carry soil, so call and ask us before you load one.
What about pine needles from my longleaf pines?
They go in. Pine straw and needles are light, so the box fills by volume long before it reaches its weight limit, and a 20 yard takes a surprising amount. Load them apart from household junk.
Brush takes room, not weight. So pick the size by pile.
A 20 yard fits most yard jobs, and a 30 yard covers storm cleanup from several trees.

Ask before you load
Fridges, freezers and AC units hold refrigerant, so call first. Branches and leaves are welcome, but load them apart from household junk, because a mixed load can bring a fine. If you're unsure about an item, ask before it goes in.
